Vivo X80 Pro, iQoo 9 Pro Getting Android 13 Update in India for Limited Users

Vivo X80 Pro and iQoo 9 Pro are getting the Android 13 update in India. Notably, this update is currently only available for those limited users who were accepted in the Android 13 Preview Program, which was opened last week. The companies said at the time that they were only accepting 500 users for each handset. So, purportedly a total of only 1,000 users are currently eligible to download this update. Vivo and iQoo have not revealed the release date for a wider roll-out of a stable Android 13 update.

Vivo and its subsidiary brand iQoo announced on Tuesday that the Vivo X80 Pro and iQoo 9 Pro users in India who were successful in applying for the Android 13 Preview Program can now install the Android 13 update. They have to simply go to Settings > System Update.

In addition, Vivo X80 Pro owners have to first upgrade their smartphone to the latest system version or above. Similarly, iQoo 9 Pro users need to install system version or above before installing this update. Both companies have mentioned that this preview update may slow the performance of smartphones for some users.

The remaining majority of Vivo X80 Pro and iQoo 9 Pro users in India who were not accepted in the Android 13 Preview Program will receive the stable Android 13 update via push notification after the event is over.

In related news, Google has also started rolling out Android 13 updates in India. According to a recent report, the Pixel 6a and Pixel 4a, which are officially available in India have started receiving Android 13 update in India. In addition, despite not being officially sold in India, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models are reportedly also getting the Android 13 software update in the country

iPhone 14 Early Announcement, Shipment Could Help Apple Minimise Recession Risk on Demand

iPhone 14 may reportedly be announced on September 7 as against the previous alleged date of September 13. While it may not look like a big deal to us, but from Apple’s point-of-view, an early announcement and shipment could help the company minimise the impact of recession risk on demand, as per known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He also says that early announcement/ shipping date could be one of the reasons why Apple offered a positive outlook for the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22) in the last earnings call.

Kuo tweeted that since the “global recession risk is still growing and unpredictable,” a move to announce/ ship the iPhone 14 series of smartphones as soon as possible may minimise the impact of recession risk on demand. Apple typically announces iPhone models and other products such as Apple Watch and these products are released in stores about a week and a half after they are unveiled. Apple is expected to stick to that pattern this year.

The news comes two days after Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman cited people with knowledge of the matter as saying that Apple is aiming to hold a launch event on September 7 to unveil the iPhone 14 line. iPhones are said to generate more than half its sales. Gurman says that Apple is updating its flagship product at a time when consumers cope with inflation and a shaky economy. But it is said to have been faring better than its peers.

This is echoed by a report, which claims that Apple has successfully minimised the effect of supply chain constraints in its product launches as compared to all other players in the market. “Of course, some products such as Studio Display and new MacBooks suffered a bit from availability, but the Cupertino company was able to handle iPhone shipments pretty well,” the report said.

Apple is expected to launch four models in its iPhone 14 series: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Reports have suggested that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max could get a $100 price hike (roughly Rs. 8,000) in comparison to last year’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

iPhone 14 Pro Models Said to Offer 128GB Storage, Same as iPhone 13 Series

iPhone 14 series has been part of several leaks and rumours for the past few months. The upcoming Apple iPhone lineup could include four models — iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max — and they are expected to be launched on September 13. The iPhone 14 Pro models were earlier speculated to come with increased storage capacity over the previous models. They were claimed to start with 256GB of storage, compared to 128GB of the iPhone 13 Pro models. Now, in a new development, a market research analyst suggests that upcoming Pro models will continue to offer 128GB of storage.

Earlier, research firm TrendForce reportedly suggested that the iPhone 14 Pro models will start with 256GB storage. Now, a new report by MacRumors, quoting Haitong International Securities Tech Research Analyst Jeff Pu, said that the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models will continue to offer 128GB of storage as its predecessors, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro.

The analyst has reportedly mentioned that the iPhone 14 Pro models will be available in the same storage capacities — 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB — as the iPhone 13 Pro models.

Earlier this week, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that iPhone 14 Pro models could be launched at a higher price than their predecessors. The ASP of the iPhone 14 Pro series is estimated to climb by about 15 percent to $1,000 – $1,050 (roughly Rs. 79,000 – Rs. 83,000) for the upcoming iPhone 14 series, compared to the iPhone 13 series ASP. The iPhone 13 Pro was unveiled in India last year with a price tag of Rs. 1,19,900 for the base 128GB storage model.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 14 series on September 13. The iPhone 14 Pro models could be powered by the new A16 Bionic chip. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, on the other hand, are expected to pack the A15 Bionic chip that is available on the current iPhone 13 devices.

Samsung and iFixit Start Selling Repair Parts for Select Galaxy Devices as Part of Self-Repair Programme

Samsung has finally launched its self-repair programme for the US market after announcing the initiative back in March. The South Korean electronics giant had announced the programme earlier this year in collaboration with leading online repair community iFixit. For now, only a handful of Samsung devices will be supported by this programme and this short list does not include last year’s Galaxy S22 models.

Samsung, for the time being, will only provide repair parts for its Galaxy S20, S21 models, and the Galaxy Tab S7+ tablet. Customers who wish to repair their own devices can now purchase the necessary genuine parts and repair tools from iFixit’s online store, Samsung 837 store, along with Samsung retail and service locations across the US. These parts will be offered at the same price as Samsung’s service partners. The self-repair programme seems to be largely conducted by iFixit with Samsung providing the genuine spare parts for the same.

A quick glance through the iFixit website shows repair kits ranging from $66.99 (approximately Rs. 5,200) to $239.99 (approximately Rs. 18,000) depending on the device selected. The replacement back panels are also available in different finishes and will match the colour of the device being repaired.

For now, the Self-Repair programme is limited to certain types of repairs only. This would include replacing a display screen, a device’s back glass, and charging ports, which seem to be fairly basic in nature. Samsung does have plans to add more repair options that can be conducted by a user in the future, along with supporting more Galaxy devices. The company has yet to announce the availability of its self-repair programme outside the US.

Samsung recently announced a new Repair mode for its older Galaxy devices in Korea. The repair mode once enabled by the user will secure personal data by providing only limited access to the repair technician at its service centres. The mode will only be available on Samsung’s Galaxy S21 models for now and will be expanded to additional models in the future.

US Says It Will Limit Size of Government Subsidy on Semiconductor Chips

The US Commerce Department said late on Friday it will limit the size of government subsidizes for semiconductor manufacturing and will not let firms use funding to “pad their bottom line.”

On Thursday, the US House of Representatives gave final approval to legislation that provides $52 billion (nearly Rs. 4 lakh crore) in government funding to boost semiconductor manufacturing and research. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the legislation early next week.

The Commerce Department Friday told chips companies awards will be “no larger than is necessary to ensure the project happens here in the United States” and added it will discourage “race-to-the-bottom subsidy competitions between states and localities.”

Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Pramila Jayapal said the group backed the legislation after lengthy negotiations with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo after the group expressed concerns chips companies would use funding for stock buybacks or pay dividends.

A caucus spokeswoman said Friday “progressives were able to vote for the bill yesterday, confident that the department would be ensuring the funding could not be used for corporate self-enrichment.”

Commerce said applicants must supply detailed financial information and projections for proposed projects and capital investment plans: “The department will go over these with a fine-tooth comb and make sure that companies are not padding their models to ask for outsized incentives.”

A Commerce Department spokesperson declined to comment beyond the web posting.

The department vowed to “give preference in awards to companies who commit to make future investments that grow the domestic semiconductor industry … and not engage in stock buybacks.”

The legislation does not prohibit stock buybacks by companies receiving government funding but does prohibit the use of grant funds for the buybacks.

Companies winning funding will be prohibited for 10 years “from engaging in significant transactions in China or other countries of concern involving any leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing capacity or material expansions of legacy semiconductor manufacturing capacity designed to export to the US and other countries.”
