Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Leads Foldable Smartphone Segment in Q1 2022: DSCC

[ad_1]

Samsung continues to dominate the foldable smartphone segment even after its market share fell to 74 percent in Q1 2022, according to a recent report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 led the market for the third consecutive quarter with a 51 percent share. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 retained the second position for the third consecutive quarter, while Huawei P50 Pocket took the third spot. These three smartphones accounted for 91 percent of the market share. No other smartphone brand had more than a 2.5 percent share.

According to a report from DSCC, Samsung has continued to dominate the foldable smartphone category even after its market share fell to 74 percent in Q1 2022. Huawei’s shipment share rose to 20 percent; but no other brand was able to cross the 2 percent market share.

Clamshell models, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Huawei P50 Pocket accounted for 70 percent of market share. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 led the market for the third consecutive quarter with a 51 percent share, whereas the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 took the second position after being nearly overtaken by Huawei P50 Pocket. These three smartphone models accounted for a 91 percent market share in the category. No other smartphone brands were unable to cross the 2.5 percent market share.

The foldable smartphone shipments grew by a whopping 571 percent year-over-year in first quarter of 2022 to 2.22 million. The report says that this is the third best quarter till date for the category. However, the category saw itself shrinking by 47 percent quarter-over-quarter from the record high of 4.2 million smartphones shipped in Q4 2021.

Looking ahead, Ross Young, author of the report and co-founder, CEO of DSCC, said, “We expect a 107 percent increase in foldable smartphone shipments to over 16 million units with 102 percent increase in foldable smartphone panel shipments to over 20 million.”

Talking about Samsung’s upcoming smartphones, Young added, “Driving the growth will be Samsung’s ambitious plans for its upcoming Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 launch as well as contributions from new models in 2H’22 (second half of 2022) from three other brands.”

He also said that one of the interesting developments to watch out for this year will be how the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 will perform. DSCC believes that Samsung has recently increased its expectations for the smartphone. Young further said that Samsung is expecting faster growth for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in comparison to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 that likely indicates towards a lower launch price than last year’s $1,799 (roughly Rs. 1,40,000).

Phones Powered by Unisoc SoCs Vulnerable to Remote Hacker Attacks: Check Point Research

[ad_1]

Mobile phones powered by Unisoc chips are found to be vulnerable to an issue that could allow attackers to remotely block communication. Cybersecurity analysis firm Check Point Research on Thursday announced that it identified a vulnerability in the Unisoc modem that could impact communication. The issue exists in the modem firmware and affects 4G and 5G Unisoc chipsets, according to the firm. Unisoc acknowledged the vulnerability and considered it of critical nature, giving a 9.4 score out of 10.

Check Point Research said in its report that the critical vulnerability, which is tracked as CVE-2022-20210, was discovered while scanning Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message handlers. Using a malformed packet, the issue could allow a hacker or a military unit to disrupt the radio communication of a device.

The researcher at Check Point Research was able to detect the vulnerability on the Unisoc T700 chip-based Motorola Moto G20 with the Android January 2022 security patch. However, the issue is not limited to a particular Unisoc SoC model or a specific phone.

“We found a vulnerability in the Unisoc modem built in 11 percent of smartphones,” said Slava Makkaveev, Reverse Engineering and Security Research attorney at Check Point Software, in a prepared statement. “An attacker could have used a radio station to send a malformed packet that would reset the modem, depriving the user of the possibility of communication. Left unpatched, cellular communication can be blocked by an attacker.”

Makkaveev added that the vulnerability was found in the Unisoc modem firmware and not in the Android operating system itself.

Check Point Research disclosed its findings to Unisoc in May. The Shanghai-based chipmaker acknowledged the vulnerability upon the receipt of disclosure and issued a patch.

However, the fix has not yet reached users. Google said that it will be publishing the given patch in the upcoming Android Security bulletin, the research firm noted.

Check Point Research urges users to always update their mobile phones to the latest software version available.

Unisoc, previously known as Spreadtrum, has been getting bigger in the market of smartphone chipmakers for the last few months.

According to a recent report by market research firm Counterpoint, the share of Unisoc grew to 47 percent in the first quarter of the year from 20 percent in the same quarter last year. It also gave a tough fight to MediaTek that struggled with supply constraints for 4G chips.

Companies including Samsung, Motorola, and Realme are using Unisoc SoCs in their budget phones.

[ad_1]

Xiaomi has added Redmi Note 7, Redmi K20, Redmi 7, Mi Play, Mi 9 SE, among others in the list of smartphones that will no longer receive any software or firmware updates (including security updates). The Chinese company also says that the smartphones included in the End-of-Support list (EOS) might not even respond to security vulnerability reports. Xiaomi releases monthly as well as quarterly security patch updates for its devices for at least two years after the product is listed in the marketplace.

As per the EOS list, shared in its official Telegram channel – Mi Fans Home, Xiaomi included a number of smartphones that will not receive the software or firmware updates going forward. The list includes smartphones such as Redmi K20, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi Note 7S, Redmi Note 7, Redmi 7, Redmi Y3, Mi Pad 4 Plus, Mi Pad 4, Mi Play, and Mi 9 SE. These handsets will not get the MIUI 13 update. The Redmi Note 7 series, and the Redmi K20 were popular smartphones in their respective categories at the time of their launch in 2019.

Xiaomi releases monthly and quarterly security patch updates on Xiaomi devices for at least two years after a product listing in the marketplace. These updates include Android security patches released by Google as well as patches for Xiaomi-specific issues.

Xiaomi launched the MIUI 13 as a successor to MIUI 12.5 in India earlier this year. The custom skin is said to improve defragmentation efficiency on devices by up to 60 percent and improve read and write efficiency by up to 60 percent over the previous MIUI versions. It is touted to be focused on improved performance, redefined design, and multitasking features. It also brings a new system-level file storage system called Liquid Storage as well as support for widgets that look like the ones on iOS 15.

Moto E32s First Impressions: A Good Looking Budget Smartphone

[ad_1]

The Moto E32s is the first addition in 2022 to the budget E series from Motorola. It features a new design and is powered by the MediaTek Helio G37 SoC. The Motorola E32s also offers a 90Hz LCD display and runs Android 12 out of the box. These features are quite interesting for the price, making the Moto E32s a worthy option for those on a budget. I spent some time with the Moto E32s and here are my first impressions.

One look at the Moto E32s and you’ll find it hard to believe that it is a budget smartphone. It looks a lot more premium than the price it commands. The Moto E32s has a plastic construction but feels sturdy in the hand. The back panel of the device is made of a glossy acrylic that resembles glass, adding to the appeal of the Moto E32s. However, it does pick up smudges rather easily, so you should be better off using it with the case provided in the box.

motorola e32s back gadgets360 Moto E32s First Impressions

The acrylic back panel gives the Moto E32s a premium look

The frame of the Moto E32s is boxy and measures 8.49mm in thickness. It has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which is easy to reach and this sits almost flush with the frame. Motorola has curved the corners of the frame, so it doesn’t dig into your palm while holding it. The Moto E32s weighs 185g which I found to be manageable. The phone is IP52 rated for dust and water resistance.

The Moto E32s sports a 6.5-inch HD+ IPS display. It has a 90Hz refresh rate, a peak brightness of 500 nits, and Panda glass for scratch protection. It has a hole-punch cutout at the top for an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The display has noticeably thick bezels but these are acceptable in the budget segment.

Motorola has picked the MediaTek Helio G37 SoC to power the Moto E32s which is the same SoC used in the Moto G22 in India. The two variants of the Moto E32s include one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, and the other with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. As a part of an introductory offer, Motorola is offering the base variant at Rs. 8,999 for a limited time. The higher variant is priced at Rs.9,999. Motorola hasn’t clarified what the prices will be post the introductory offer. You can pick the Moto E32s in either Slate Gray or Misty Silver.

The triple camera setup on the Moto E32s has a 16-megapixel primary camera

You get a triple camera set up on the Moto E32s consisting of a 16-megapixel primary camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth camera. The off-centre camera module does protrude causing the phone to wobble when trying to use it on a flat surface. You get a 5,000mAh battery in the Moto E32s and it is capable of 15W fast charging. However, Motorola only bundles a 10W charger in the box.

The SIM tray of the Moto E32s has dual nano-SIM slots and a dedicated slot for the microSD card. The Moto E32s supports Bluetooth 5, dual-band Wi-Fi, and dual 4G VoLTE support.

In terms of software, the Moto E32s runs Android 12 out of the box with its custom MyUX customisations on top. Motorola promises two years of Android security updates for this smartphone. The Moto E32s has some preinstalled apps such as Dailyhunt, Facebook, and Josh. I also came across a notification for Glance lockscreen wallpapers but couldn’t find it in the settings. You also get a fair amount of Google apps preinstalled. If you don’t have much use for them, you would be better off uninstalling these apps to free up some internal storage.

The side mounted fingerprint scanner sits almost flush with the frame of the Moto E32s

With the addition of the Moto E32s, consumers now have a new option of a budget smartphone running near stock Android. Motorola has designed the E32s well and it looks more premium than the price it commands. It faces competition from the Redmi 10A which is priced lower than the base variant of the E32s. The Realme C31 and the Redmi 10 also compete in the same price segment. The Moto E32s does show promise, but does it deliver good performance on all fronts? I will be testing out the performance, battery life and the cameras in the full review, so stay tuned to Gadgets 360.

Tipster Yogesh Brar leaked the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 specifications on Twitter on Wednesday. The tipster also shared detailed specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 earlier this week.

Lu Weibing, General Manager at Redmi has released a poster on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo saying that the newly released Redmi Note 11T Pro has sold over 270,000 units in one hour of it going on sale. The smartphone was launched in China on May 24 along with the Redmi Note 11T Pro+.

An Astro Boy Limited Edition of the Redmi Note 11T Pro was also launched with these two smartphones and is supposed to be available starting June 18. The company said that only 10,000 units of the smartphone will be available for purchase.

Redmi Note 11T Pro was launched in China at CNY 1,799 for the 6GB RAM + 128GB internal memory variant. The 8GB RAM + 128GB internal memory variant is priced at CNY 1,899 (roughly Rs. 22,000) and the 8GB RAM + 256GB internal memory variant is priced at CNY 2,099 (roughly Rs. 24,300). OnePlus 10T 5G Tipped to Launch Later This Year — Not OnePlus 10 Ultra

[ad_1]
OnePlus 10T 5G is tipped to be the company’s next and only flagship phone to come this year. The latest claim is contradicting with the previous reports that suggested the launch of the OnePlus 10 Ultra as the company’s new premium model — after the OnePlus 10 Pro. The OnePlus 10T 5G may include some incremental changes over the OnePlus 10 Pro, including a new processor and faster charging. The new flagship is also likely to come with a new OxygenOS version in global markets.

Tipster Max Jambor has tweeted to claim that the final name of OnePlus’ next and only flagship phone to debut this year will be the OnePlus 10T 5G.

Refuting the reports that surfaced earlier that suggested the OnePlus 10 Ultra as the company’s next flagship, the tipster claimed that there was no Ultra in the lineup — and neither a OnePlus 10T Pro.

Although exact details are yet to be revealed, the tipster also suggested that the OnePlus 10T 5G would come with some performance enhancements with a similar camera experience.

OnePlus recently confirmed that its next flagship will be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, which is an improved version of the existing Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with a slightly higher clock speed and some other tweaks. The OnePlus 10T 5G is quite likely to have the same SoC in place.

The OnePlus 10T 5G is also expected to have a faster charging experience over the OnePlus 10 Pro. That model came with 80W charging support, though OnePlus later brought the OnePlus 10R with 150W charging.

OnePlus did bring some models in the ‘T’ series until the launch of the OnePlus 8T in 2020 to offer improvements over its existing flagships. That trend, however, changed last year when the company brought the OnePlus 9RT as an upgrade to the OnePlus 9 — instead of bringing the OnePlus 9T.

In January, OnePlus introduced the OnePlus 10 Pro in China as its latest flagship. The phone debuted in India in March.
