Catholic group releases list of members accused of sexual abuse
MONTREAL –
Canadian Jesuits have released a list of priests and brothers they believe have been accused of sexually abusing minors over the past 70 years.
Jesuits, a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church, published a list of 27 names today, following an audit that began in 2020 that examined documents dating back to the 1950s.
All but three of the men named are dead.
The release of the names is part of Jesuit efforts to promote transparency, accountability, justice and healing for survivors of abuse, the order said.
In many cases, the abuse was discovered after the death of the alleged abuser, and some cases never reached a criminal or civil trial.
In a statement, Rev. Erik Oland said that despite the exhaustive review, other names may be added to the list in the future.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published on March 13, 2023.
