Police say people are seriously injured after a car plowed into pedestrians walking on the side of the road in Amqui, Quebec’s Basse-Saint-Laurent region.
The driver is being interrogated by the regional police.
State Police Sgt. Claude Doiron did not say how many people were hit, but said some were seriously injured and their lives could be in danger.
Doiron said the incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. along Boulevard Saint-Benoit in Amqui, about 350 km northeast of Quebec City.
Public Safety Minister Francois Bonnardel said preliminary information suggested a “serious accident” had occurred, adding that teams were on their way.
Pascal Berube, who represents the region in the state legislature, said he was on his way to the scene and was troubled by what he heard.
