This Yaletown restaurant has earned Vancouver’s ninth Michelin star

Vancouver’s restaurant scene has earned another Michelin star.

The Parisian tire maker-turned-gastronomic delight awarded the honor to Japanese restaurant Okeya Kyujiro, led by chef Takuya Matsuda, at a ceremony Thursday night.

This is the ninth restaurant in the city to receive the honor.

“It’s hard to believe,” says executive chef Yuki Ana, adding that their goal has always been to get the coveted Michelin star.

“We will continue to work hard.”

Featured videoThursday night’s ceremony celebrated Vancouver’s 77 Michelin Guide restaurants for 2023, including newly awarded Okeya Kyujiro, bringing the city’s total to nine stars. Andrea Carlson, owner of fellow Michelin-starred Burdock & Co., also talks about sustainability in the industry.

The restaurant, also located in Montreal, opened its Yaletown location a year ago. It serves food omakase style, meaning the meal is decided by the chef.

The guide described dining at the restaurant as “a memorable show from start to finish”, serving quality seasonal fish with meticulous attention to detail.

Vancouver’s Michelin Guide now features a total of 77 establishments.

5 more gourmet restaurants

Michelin has also added five new bib gourmets to its Vancouver guide, recognizing good food at a more affordable price. The list now includes 17 restaurants.

Newly added bib gourmet restaurants are:

  • A farmer’s apprentice
  • Karma Indian Bistro
  • Motonobu Udon
  • Seaport City Seafood
  • Sushi Hill

12 new restaurants have also been added to the recommended list.

  • Bao Bei
  • Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar
  • Eliza
  • Folk
  • Hanai
  • Moltaca
  • Regal Mansion Kitchen
  • Sushi Gin
  • Suyo
  • Tetsu Sushi Bar
  • Wildlight Kitchen + Bar

Michelin began displaying stars in Canada last year, opening guides in both Toronto and Vancouver.

Two additional Toronto restaurants this year awarded a Michelin starbringing the city’s total to 15.

Anonymous inspectors fly into cities to visit restaurants over several weeks to determine their list of recommendations.

Michelin inspectors base their reviews on five criteria: quality produce, harmony of flavors, mastery of cooking techniques, personality of the chef in the kitchen and consistency during each visit, as each restaurant is inspected several times a year.

Vancouver the first Michelin guide in 2022 saw eight restaurants awarded Michelin stars, 12 gourmet and 40 recommended restaurants.
